Daniela Rodríguez Martinez not only has a deep knowledge of cinematographer’s craft but she is also that unique type of person, who is naturally curious.
Here at The Daily Dreamer, we believe that curiosity is the main driving power of both worlds. The real one, and the one you dream about.
Daniela was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and after a nomadic life’s journey, found herself pursuing cinematography in Los Angeles. Being a cinematographer has taught her to be more aware of the surrounding world, and what’s most important, that films do not have a single truth. Films can be interpreted in a number of ways, depending on the viewer.
Daniela, what determines your talent? What do you do best and what brings you joy?
I think that it is my perseverance and my will to want to always grow by learning new techniques, equipment and working with different cultures and themes. I think I enjoy every aspect of cinematography; from imagining different visual frames that can tell the story I am working with, in an interesting manner to thinking about the quality of light, sources, and positioning of the units. But I think that what I enjoy most about my work is having the ability to bring a script to life with the collaboration of talented professionals.
What was the most challenging part of making the film?
The most challenging part of shooting ‘The Daily Dreamer’ was thinking about the lighting as it plays a very important role in telling the story because we are creating this fantastical surreal world. There were many light gags, and theatrical lighting mentioned throughout the script, so thinking about portraying those on-screen on a tight budget was a major challenge but fortunately, we could make it happen with the help of the talented crew we were able to bring on.
What is a cinematographer’s routine? What are the worst part and the fun part of your job?
The way I like to approach a script is having it sent to me, give it a first read. Then meeting with the director and talking about the script to see how both of us are picturing it and the overall budget we count with. Once that is set and the shot list is finished, I like to create an ideal crew and equipment list that I would like to bring to the project in terms of camera and lighting to bring the director’s visions to life. Afterward, we need to get some quotes and modify the original equipment and crew list taking into account the actual budget. This is usually the hardest part as it takes some time. Once that is done, we have some other pre-production before the shooting begins. My favorite part is the production stage as it is when everything that we all worked on during pre-production comes to life and we get to create.
What was your biggest inspiration for this film?
Some chiaroscuro paintings.
Aurora or M? Are you a realist or a dreamer?
I think I am both. A realist when I have to be, and a dreamer whenever I approach a project or anything I like.
Are you a morning or a night person?
I think I am a night person. I am more productive at night though since I have been living in LA think I am becoming more of a morning person.
What are the perfect conditions for a perfect sleep?
A dark room, cool and soft blankets.
Do you dream? Do you enjoy it or it frightens you?
I believe we all dream when we sleep. Some people just have an easier time remembering them. I enjoy whenever I am able to remember my dreams.
Can technology or art improve your sleep?
Maybe, on some occasions perhaps, for example when you are having a hard time falling asleep. Though in my case, I need all electronics and all lights to be off to be able to have a good night’s sleep.
What about naps during day time?
I love them!
